Failure Is Not An Option: Plan To Stop Student Failure

27 May Posted by in Academics, Homework Help | 1 comment

For too long parents and teachers have been unintentionally allowing students to fail. Many in education have even accepted “failure as a right” and “a part of learning.” This philosophy and line of thinking is obviously flawed. Failure should not be an option and students should not be allowed an “easy out” of completing an assignment.

Home and School Study Hall Program

The following teaching strategy can be used at home and at school. When a student has not finished or completed an assignment that was due that day the following study plan should be implemented.

Home Study Plan (HSP)

1. Parent receives an email from the teacher sharing that an assignment failed to be turned in. The email includes the actual assignment, directions and resources to be used to complete the assignment.

2. Before dinner is served, the student must work on or complete the assignment during one hour of study or assignment completion time. Only the missing homework can be worked on.

3. The parent emails the teacher back that the student worked on the assignment and lets the teacher know what was achieved or what progress was made toward assignment completion. No chores, video games, phone calls, TV or friends are allowed to interfere with set HSP.

4. The regular homework time after dinner is still in effect.

General homework time guidelines.

Elementary: 60 minute time limit

Middle School: 90 minute time limit

High School: 120 time limit

Special projects may require more time. Use common sense. Homework should not be a battle or exhausting time for your child. If this is the case, speak with your child’s teacher or go to ScottCounseling.com and go to: “Ask A Counselor”

School Study Plan (STP)

1. At the end of each school day, teachers turn in names of students and the actual missing assignments to a designated school staff person. That night the designated staff person places a STP notification pass to the student missing the assignment to the homebase or the first period teacher. This notifies the student that they are to report to the STP room during lunch.

2. Students missing assignments are to report to a set specific room during the lunch period. Before the student reports to the study room they get their lunch, pen and other necessary materials. Extra curriculum text books for each subject area are available so students don’t have to go back to locker or classroom to get necessary materials. Students eat lunch while they work on the assignment.

4. Students who fail to report are tracked down (most likely in cafeteria) and are escorted to STP.

5. Completed assignments are collected and placed in teacher’s box at the end of each STP.

6. Student who do not finish or complete assignment during an assigned STP have to report the next day.

It takes a couple of times for students to get use to this assignment completion plan for both home and school. There are no arguments. Failure is no longer an option.
