Is your 12 year old avoiding his homework? Does he spend all his free time on X-Box? Is your 14 year old daughter spending more time on the Internet social Websites than completing her homework? Than, this article is for you!
Help! My Young Teen Will Not Do His Homework!
Is your young teen, or middle school child, easily distracted by cell phones, computers, social networking, TV and and loud music? Shut the power off! Literally! Every home has a circuit breaker box. One of the breakers leads to your child’s bedroom. Shut the power off to your child’s bedroom by flipping the breaker. This will end all computer use in his or her bedroom and you will not have to share one verbal thought with your child. Your child will immediately get the message!
Before you go to this extreme, here are some helpful tips and parenting strategies to end the homework hassles:
-
Place your child on a homework contract. For every hour he or she does on homework, 15 minutes is rewarded with supervised TV, cell phone or electronic games.
-
Many schools have after school help programs. Contact one of your child’s teachers. Share with your child that he may play 1/2 hour of X-Box each time he stays after school.
-
Study Buddy: Some kids do better when they are doing homework with a friend. Speak with the parent who has the child that you trust to be a good influence on your child when it comes to behavior and staying on task. Set up a study night at your home. Share with the kids that when they complete their homework assignments they can use a computer game. Make sure you let the other parent know what you are doing and what game (or incentive/reward) the kids will be receiving for successful homework time.
