Single Parenting and Dating

25 Nov Posted by in Divorce, YouTube Counseling | Comments

Being a single parent is often a difficult task on it’s own.  Add dating to the single parenting role and life may become even more complex for you and your child.  It does not have to be this way.  Many single parents date and their children often support the decision.  ScottCounseling provides some insights to parents wishing to explore the single parent dating option with some do’s and don’ts.

Do’s

  • Reassure your child that you love him or her.  Children who feel secure with your love will more likely accept the fact that you are sharing your love with someone else as well.
  • Speak with your child in advance.  Depending on your child’s age and maturity level, it’s often appropriate to share your feeling, and listen to their regarding your beginning to date.
  • Remember to be a role model.  Your child(ren) is watching your dating behavior.

Don’ts:

  • Avoid sharing all your “casual” dates with your children.  There may be a chance that your child becomes attached to one (or more) individuals that you date and this may cause them a problem.
  • Do not force your child to accept the person that you begin dating; especially right away.  Provide your child with the time that he or she needs.
  • Avoid allowing your dating partner to become the parenting figure in your home; that’s your job.
